Brian B., M.D.

Prior to finding FIT Nashville I had sought the assistance of orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, chiropractors, and numerous trainers in an effort to treat pain in my lower back.  The pain was so severe at times that I had difficulty working, walking, sleeping, and even getting out of bed some days.  I was assured that I did not have a herniated disc or a hip problem but no one could tell me why I was having pain or how to treat it.  I tried injections, physical therapy, exercises, stretches, etc., all to no avail.  I was so frustrated that I began to think that perhaps I was imagining the pain.

At Bryan Berndt's recommendation I started training with Wil Santi in March of 2009.  Wil seemed to feel he could help me.  I was skeptical but desperate so I purchased a block of 20 sessions.  I worked with Wil regularly and gradually my pain began to improve.  This was the first real progress I had made.  I continued working with Wil and now, 14 months later, I am amazed to be pain free.  I am able to focus on achieving fitness and strength goals that a year ago seemed entirely unattainable.  I am extremely grateful to Bryan and Wil for helping me live a more comfortable, healthy life.

Jacky

My name is Jacky and I have been working out with the folks at FIT Nashville for roughly a year and a half. I have always been athletic and enjoyed working out. However, after I hit 40 years of age, I realized I was really losing strength and stamina at an uncomfortably rapid pace!

I signed up for personal training (something I had never done before…most of my experience was with cardio aerobics and light weights) with a trainer at FIT and, honestly, it changed working out for me as I knew it.

Within three weeks of doing the customized weight program, written specifically for me, I noticed how much less “winded” I got carrying my computer bag and purse up the stairs to the office.

Within six months, I was doing push ups on a medicine ball!! I saw my abs get flatter and my legs get more definition.  I was never “in it” to lose a lot of weight…..and as I built muscle, my weight went up slightly (which happens as you change fat to muscle) but my clothes all got bigger. It was truly exciting and new experience for someone who worked out most of her life.

I NEVER got those kinds of results just doing things on my own. Now, I am a true believer in strength training, and the coaching my trainer gave me is now a permanent part of my workout life.  I am stronger, more energetic and have a better body now than I did in my 20s!

A little girl I knew years ago used to say, “Auntie Sheri, you and me, we’ve got snowball muscles.” She was right – I never had much upper body strength. For me exercise was all about running. I thought weight training was for boring jocks. But as I got older, the strength and flexibility that used to come naturally just weren’t there anymore. So, I did something I never thought I would do: go to a gym and pay someone to make me sweat. Best money I’ve ever spent.

Instead of the boring weight lifting routines I expected, my FIT trainer put me through a thorough fitness examination and designed workout programs that were fun and varied, yet pushed me to get better with each session. Before I could never do a real push up or a lat pull down; now I can do those and much more. I’ve lost inches, built stamina, and am far stronger than I’ve ever been.

I am moving to San Francisco and I’m devastated about having to give up my training at FIT. I have lost 20 pounds and my body fat has gone down 10%. Last summer I started working out at FIT doing spin classes three to four days a week – good, but I knew I needed more of a structured regimen and a whole body workout. There are so many possibilities and exercises to do with free weights that it is hard to figure out where to start, what machines to work on, and how much weight to lift.

I heard some women talk about how their bodies had changed after doing weights and working out with one of the trainers at FIT.  One woman especially piqued my interest when she said that she had greatly reduced her body fat. I started talking to other members and was able to find a group to join (that fit my price range) for personal training.  My wish had come true!  Working out with a group made me feel more committed.  The personal training gives me a regimen that involves working out for two days on my own and one day with the group.  I figured that after a few months I would have it down, but eight months later, I am still working out with my group.  Our routines change every month, making our workouts more challenging.

I love the personal interaction at FIT.  It's not a big fancy gym but it is clean, friendly and small enough where you get to know most of the members.  It's nice to go into a place where everyone knows your name.....it's like "Cheers" but instead of sitting at a bar drinking beer, you're at a gym, working out, burning calories, and getting stronger.

I am going to miss all of you.  If I ever move back to Nashville, FIT will be my gym again.

My name is Susan and I am 64.

Like many aging boomers I have had my fair share of physical issues to overcome.  Creaky knees, poor balance, fear of falling, high blood pressure, high sugar levels, and even trouble getting up off the floor.

I have been active as a gardener most of my life but never lifted a weight or did a push up.

I participated in a group personal training program for one year and got supportive instructions from my trainer.  Trust me.  He had his hands full.  He never laughed and just kept pushing me.

I feel that I have come such a long way in over a year.   I can do step ups on a box with 10lb weights.  My fear of falling is eased.

I received very positive enforcement from my cardiologist at my annual check up.
This is the first year I don’t need any cardiac medical tests.  The doctor encouraged me to keep up on my strength and cardio program.

I would love to have work-out partners in my age group.  So why not join me at F.I.T.?

A friend came over to the house the other night for dinner just after I arrived home from work.  "When I was in high school I did 100 push-ups per day.  Now that you've been working out, how many push-ups can you do?" he said.  "Let's see."  And I dropped and knocked out 20 solid ones, while wearing my heels and suit from work.  It was his turn to try after that; he couldn't do two good ones, so I told him about FIT.  When I started working out at FIT with my trainer a few months ago, I couldn't do two good push ups!

I had always wanted a more trim body but had not been in a gym since high school (more than a few years ago).  I was intimidated by gym equipment, and had no knowledge on how to work out and improve my fitness.  Then I heard about personal training at FIT.

I came in for a consultation with the manager and one of the trainers.  They both put me at ease and asked about my goals.  I started working out with my trainer twice a week and began cardio three times per week.  If I don't want to do cardio on my own, I join classes like Body Pump, Boot Camp, or Spin/Core.  The classes are convenient, and so is the location.

The whole experience has been so personalized!  In six months, my body fat has dropped from 31.2% to 24.3%!  And I've lost 3 inches from my waist.  My clothes fit better (I've had to buy new clothes!), I get compliments all of the time, I feel and eat healthier, have more energy, and I have a better body than I did when I was eighteen!  Thank you FIT!

"I would go through phases where I'd eat right and exercise, and still not lose fat.  I knew broccoli was good for me, squats were great and cardio would help -- what I didn't know was how much, how often and for how long.

For me, the FIT program combined each element to a degree that was easy to understand and follow, and that's what got me started.  And the visible results are what kept me going!"

"The ZUMBA class is the best in Nashville!  The instructor is great, and the class is small enough so that everyone can easily follow the instructor."

-Enthusiastic New ZUMBA Student-

"I've never thought of myself as an athlete.  But I feel like I'm getting the expertise, the knowledge, the professionalism that I've always imagined "real" athletes get.  And, that makes my workouts more fun -- and makes me want to work harder."

-Cindy W., Personal Training Client-

"I want training from someone who's a thorough expert.  Because that expertise is what makes my workout match - and stretch - my ability.  And it's what makes sure I'm getting the right advice at every session to get stronger, to rest right and to avoid injury.  I leave every session knowing something and understanding something I didn't know before.  It's working out with a fitness expert, not just a personal trainer."
